SuBsea Responder II

“I recently attended technical training at Lopolight’s factory and was thoroughly impressed with their quality production line. The entire experience—from the training to interacting with the people and seeing the factory firsthand—was first class.

Each lighting system is pre-assembled and tested as a complete unit for twenty-four hours before shipping, which significantly reduces installation time. I appreciated that we could use the existing wiring, saving our customer money. Additionally, Lopolight provided transition plates, allowing us to reuse the existing mast without drilling any new holes to mount the lights.

Overall, both my customer and I were completely satisfied with the installation process and the finished results.

I highly recommend Lopolight for their exceptional products and service.”

RISK

Why Your Aging Navigation Light System Is Becoming a Growing Risk

If your vessel is still operating with an aging navigation light system, you may already be exposed to hidden compliance risks, limited spare part availability, and increasing operational uncertainty.
As regulations evolve and original manufacturers discontinue support, even systems that appear to function normally can quickly become a critical liability.

What was once a routine installation can suddenly lead to inspection findings, unplanned downtime, and costly corrective actions. Modern fleets can no longer afford to rely on reactive maintenance when it comes to navigation light compliance.

THIS LEADS TO:

HIDDEN NON-COMPLIANCE WITH COLREG AND FLAG REGULATIONS INCREASED FAILURE RISK OPERATIONAL DOWNTIME DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE CLASS APPROVAL RISING MAINTENANCE COST

At the same time, spare parts availability becomes a critical vulnerability. Many legacy navigation light manufacturers have discontinued older product lines, making replacement components difficult or impossible to source. This turns even minor failures into extended outages, forcing operators into costly emergency repairs or temporary, non-approved solutions.

Reliability also degrades with age. Sealing materials, cable insulation, connectors, and electronic components are subjected to years of vibration, salt, temperature extremes, and UV exposure. This increases the probability of water ingress, corrosion, intermittent faults, and sudden failure—often without prior warning.

From an operational perspective, lack of system monitoring is a major risk. Many older systems provide no real-time status, no individual light monitoring, and no alarm feedback to the bridge. Failures can go unnoticed until they are discovered during operation or inspection, at which point corrective action becomes urgent and disruptive.

There is also a direct commercial impact. Non-compliance or repeated failures can affect insurance coverage, charter eligibility, and vessel value. Unplanned downtime, emergency installation, and class re-approval often cost significantly more than a structured, planned refit.

Finally, aging systems create a strategic risk to fleet planning. As vessels are expected to operate longer lifecycles with higher regulatory scrutiny, relying on unsupported and undocumented systems limits the ability to extend operational life safely and profitably.

In short, an aging navigation light system is no longer just a maintenance issue. It is a compliance risk, a safety risk, an operational risk, and a financial risk—all at the same time.

FOR YOU AS
DESIGNER, INTEGRATOR
& SHIP ARCHITEC

The Lopolight Refit Program is engineered to integrate
into both legacy and modern electrical infrastructures
with minimal structural modification.
The system architecture is modular by design, allowing
installations to be tailored to vessel size, classification,
and operational requirements.

TECHNICAL SYSTEM OVERVIEW FOR DESIGNERS & INSTALLERS

At the core of Class-approved installations is the Lopolight Navigation Light Control (NLC) System, built around individual relay monitoring of each navigation light. This architecture ensures continuous operational feedback, fault detection, and alarm signaling to the bridge and vessel alarm systems. Power supply configurations support both AC primary power with DC backup, providing full redundancy in accordance with Class requirements.

ELECTRICAL & COMMUNICATION INTERFACES

The NLC system supports primary power inputs from 100–240 VAC with 24 VDC emergency backup, ensuring uninterrupted operation during main power failure. Individual output channels are relay controlled and protected, allowing precise detection of open circuits, short circuits, and lamp failures.

System communication is supported through Modbus TCP/IP and RS-485, enabling seamless integration with PMS, AMS, and VDR systems as required by Class and Flag administrations.

INSTALLATION PRINCIPLES & CABLING

The Refit Program is optimized for both dockside installation and in-operation retrofits. Existing power cabling can often be reused, subject to insulation and continuity verification. Signal cables are shielded to meet EMC requirements, and all junctions utilize IP-rated connectors suitable for marine environments.

Each navigation light is supplied as a pre-assembled unit with factory-tested performance and electrical characteristics. This reduces installation time, minimizes commissioning risk, and ensures predictable system behavior upon activation.

COMPLIANCE, DOCUMENTATION & CLASS

All Lopolight refit solutions are delivered with full documentation packages including wiring diagrams, system layouts, test protocols, and certification. Systems comply with IMO COLREG, IEC standards, and are approved by leading Classification Societies such as ABS and DNV, as well as the United States Coast Guard.

- That you can depend on!

The ice-class functionality has been integrated from the early design phase; this gives a number of advantages that you can read about below. The ability to truly monitor the light, that the light can be thawed when in the ‘off’ position, only needing 1 cable for both light and heating and that we only use a fraction of the energy that our competition needs all comes together in a unique product. Did we say that there is no problem in mixing ice-class lights with regular Lopolight nav lights in a installation?
